Leviticus 20:18 “ ‘If a man has sexual relations with a woman during her monthly period, he has exposed the source of her flow, and she has also uncovered it. Both of them are to be cut off from their people.
In verse 22, we see God’s purpose for all these laws and rules: “so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out.” I googled how long from the time the wayward Israelites asked Aaron for the golden calf (Exodus 32) until this chapter, and Google AI says between 8 and 11 months, so not long at all.
Leviticus 20:19-20 “ ‘Do not have sexual relations with the sister of either your mother or your father, for that would dishonor a close relative; both of you would be held responsible. “ ‘If a man has sexual relations with his aunt, he has dishonored his uncle. They will be held responsible; they will die childless.
The Israelites haven’t been out of captivity long, they have already shown their capricious hearts, and God wants them to succeed (because He loves them), so Leviticus is as specific as He can possibly get so that the Israelites know exactly what’s acceptable to Him as they enter His land. And religion has co-opted the list as a be all, end all. Sigh.
Leviticus 20:21 “ ‘If a man marries his brother’s wife, it is an act of impurity; he has dishonored his brother. They will be childless.
Precious Savior, Help us to know that when we try to twist Your word in a way that is harmful to others, that spews hate and vitriol, that we are absolutely not being true to Your heart. You are love. And You want us to love. Help us, Jesus. Amen.
Leviticus 20:22 “ ‘Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out.
Have a blessed day.
