When you know better, do better…. (devo reflection)

Genesis 38:11 Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s household until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, just like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s household.

I literally just googled, “The Judah in Genesis 38 is King David’s relative, correct?” as I am once again flabbergasted that a Biblical stalwart could act so terribly. (The answer to my query, of course, is yes. This is the same Judah, acting anything but godly.)

Genesis 38:12 After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.

Again I am struck by the fact that God can and will and does use all things and all people to accomplish His purposes, even folks who do not act as they should, even folks who know better but don’t do better, even folks who are doing the best they can and messing it up every time they turn around.

Genesis 38:13 When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,”

Precious Savior, Thank You for continually shattering the notion that we have to be perfect to be used in Your kingdom work. Maya Angelou said, “Do the best you can until you know better. When you know better, do better.” Help me, every time I open Your word, to seek and learn and grow so that I can know better and do better for You. Amen.

Genesis 38:14 she took off her widow’s clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.

Have a blessed day.
