Exodus 3:13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
I really wish I knew what Moses was thinking as he was saying verse 13. I could totally see saying that as a way to figure out all the contingencies: “Ok, if they ask this, I say this.” But it’s totally possible that he was saying this as more of a challenge: “Oh, yeah? Well what if they say this? What am I supposed to do then?”
Exodus 3:14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”
Was Moses afraid? Was he apprehensive? Was he belligerent? You might wonder why it matters, but for me, his attitude 100% matters to what he does next. If he’s asking to figure out what to say in any situation, he’s preparing his heart for action. If he’s asking as a challenge, he’ll need more convincing before he gets started. The state of his heart matters so much.
Exodus 3:15a God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’
Precious Savior, Thank You for the inquisitive mind You have given me. Thank You that I ask questions that may seem totally weird, just because I’m curious. Thank You that I know that the state of the heart matters. Help my heart to be fertile ground for You. Always. Amen.
Exodus 3:15b “This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.
Have a blessed day.
