Spontaneous adventures…. (devo reflection)

Luke 10:1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.

Yesterday on social media I was reading about the adventures of a former student who has such an adventurous spirit. She was traveling and missed her connecting flight due to a delayed flight. She ended up with extra time in an unknown city and had an absolutely delightful spontaneous day exploring. Jesus’s directive in verse 4 to not take anything and just go would be easy for her.

Luke 10:2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

I, on the other hand, am a planner from way back. The thought of going anywhere without being thoroughly prepared, including packing all the essentials, makes me a bit panicky. But I think in the Kingdom there is room for both of us–those who “fly by the seat of your pants” and those who “use a packing list and make sure you have everything.” We are all useful in God’s kingdom.

Luke 10:3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.

Precious Savior, I admire people who can have spontaneous adventures, but I am not one of them. Thank You for the understanding that You need all of us to shine Your light. Help me not to waste time and energy wishing I were different. Help me to appreciate others while using my own strengths, those You’ve given me, to shine Your light as well. Amen.

Luke 10:4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

Have a blessed day.
