Relationship with Him…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 87:1 He has founded His city on the holy mountain.

I learned a long time ago that family is not just the people you were born into. It’s the people you choose, the people who get you, who love you, support you, correct you. Family goes beyond birthright. It is about choice, about choosing relationship. God’s family works the same way.

Psalm 87:4 “I will record Rahab and Babylon among those who acknowledge me—Phillistia too, and Tyre, along with Cush— and will say, ‘This one was born in Zion.’”

Commentary on Psalm 87 was very enlightening. It talked a lot about relationship and how the repetition of “This one was born in Zion” was an open invitation for gentiles into God’s kingdom, that they key to acceptance into God’s family was relationship with Him and not birthright.

Psalm 87:5 “Indeed, of Zion it will be said, “This one and that one were born in her, and the Most High Himself will establish her.”

Lord, Thank You for this day and this  scripture. You built us for relationship, specifically relationship with You. You want us as part of Your family. You want to say of us, “This one was born here.” And You created us with an innate need for that belonging. But this world is so loud, so insistent that it, the world, will help us belong. Help us not to fall for the lies of this world, Lord. Draw us into relationship and fellowship with You. Amen.

Psalm 87:6 The LORD will write in the register of the peoples: “This one was born in Zion.”

Have a blessed day.
