Reading, pondering, and drawing closer…. (devo reflection)

Genesis 38:6-7 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.

I have mentioned before that I read commentary that I don’t totally agree with each morning after I read the day’s scripture. The commentary usually provides good historical background, but the ideologies of the author are much different than my own. Today’s commentary was one of those days where I went, “What?!?”

Genesis 38:8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.”

I’ve thought of choosing a different commentary for my daily study, but, honestly, I think that having my views challenged, seeing totally different views than my own, is a good exercise each day. It makes me stop and ponder–Why do I believe what I do? Has the commentary presented me with evidence to make me rethink my view? Could I be missing something in my view?

Genesis 38:9 But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother.

Precious Savior, Thank You for the ability to read Your word, to read commentary about Your word, to question and ponder–both my views and the views of others. All of this reading and pondering draws me closer to You, and that is my goal as I sit with You each morning. Help me, always, to draw closer. Thank You. Amen.

Genesis 38:10 What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also.

Have a blessed day.
