Genesis 14:17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
Commentary talks about Abram and Melchizedek outdoing each other in love. Melchizedek, priest of God Most High, brings out the bread and wine and blesses Abram verbally (along with praising God). Abram blesses Melchizedeck by giving a tenth of all he has.
Genesis 14:18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High,
This idea of outdoing each other in love is a beautiful thought, but I’m not sure that humans, with our fleshly humanity, are capable. I think we can give freely, give abundantly, give of time, talent, material goods up to a point and then we want…recognition or thanks or….something and our giving, our outdoing in love trickles to a halt.
Genesis 14:19 and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.
Precious Savior, We are Your creation, Your masterpiece. You created within us this desire to praise You, to please You, to outdo each other in love. Help us to work past our human nature, to give past our natural inclination, to outdo each other in love. Always. Amen.
Genesis 14:20 And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
