Genesis 21:31 So that place was called Beersheba, because the two men swore an oath there.
What catches my attention in today’s scripture is the planting of a tamarisk tree in Beersheba. Why did Abraham plant a tree? Why that specific species of tree? Is there some significance to the fact that Saul will eventually also sit under a tamarisk tree in 1 Samuel? So many questions this morning.
Genesis 21:32 After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines.
Commentary says that planting the tamarisk tree was a show of faith in God’s promise to Abraham’s family because it is a tree that takes a long time to grow. The tree is also planted as an homage to God’s promise, so it’s a symbol of Abraham’s thanks to God. Google says that the spiritual significance of the tamarisk tree is as a symbol of strength and resilience, both of which we have seen from Abraham….eventually.
Genesis 21:33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Eternal God.
Precious Savior, You know that I appreciate plants, though I am not a natural gardener. Thank You for the joy and hope that come from nurturing plant life. Thank You for the ability to pay homage through our tending of plants and nature. Thank You. Amen.
Genesis 21:34 And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
Have a blessed day.
