Luke 1:46 begins Mary’s song, also known as the magnificat. I’m sure I knew of its existence in my youth, but I don’t really remember anything about it until I was an adult. And even now, I feel like I ought to know, to understand much more about it than I do.
Luke 1:47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
What I do know is that this song of praise comes after the angel’s visit, after Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, before Jesus’s birth. Mary knows the road ahead, she knows what’s being asked of her (as much as anyone can understand such a task), and she’s grateful.
Luke 1:48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,
Precious Savior, I know I’m a grumbler. I don’t like that about myself, and I know I need to work on my attitude. Help me to be more like Mary. Help me to praise You. Always. Amen.
Luke 1:49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name.
