Exodus 2:17 Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue and watered their flock.
As I read today’s scripture and commentary, I am reminded of a saying, “God answers prayers in three ways: Yes. No. Not Yet.” When I googled that saying, I found one iteration of the three answers as: “Yes. Not Yet. I have something better in mind.” Honestly, I think I like that one even better because when we hear “No,” God often means, “That is not my best for you. I have something better in mind.”
Exodus 2:18 When the girls returned to Reuel their father, he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?”
I feel a little like that’s what Moses is going through. He killed the Egyptian who was beating the Hebrew (sticking up for his people), and he was chastised the next day by two Hebrews who were hurting each other. Pharaoh heard he killed an Egyptian (someone oppressing his people), so he had to run for his life. But all the while, God has something better in mind for Moses.
Exodus 2:19 They answered, “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.”
Precious Savior, Forgive us when we don’t dream big enough for ourselves, when we satisfy ourselves with the crumbs of the feast You have prepared for us. When we pray, help us to understand if you are answering Yes, Not yet, or I have something better in mind. Grow and mature us so that we are ready when Your time is right. Amen.
Exodus 2:20 “And where is he?” Reuel asked his daughters. “Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat.”
Have a blessed day.
