Luke 8:19a Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him,
To my way of thinking, family is everything. God first, then family, then others. Family includes the family I was born into, the ones that were created through marriage and birth (so my siblings’ families are my family and my family is their family). It also includes friends who are family, lovingly called framily.
Luke 8:19b …but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd.
So my first reaction to verse 20 is….ouch. Shouldn’t Christ’s family have some sort of privilege? Interestingly, commentary tells us that Jesus’s brothers were not supportive of His ministry while He was alive. (It makes me wonder why they were there to see Him, honestly.) Also, as someone adopted into Christ’s family through grace, I’m thankful that there isn’t a hierarchy in place that I can’t touch. Jesus loves us…all of us…fiercely, deeply, completely.
Luke 8:20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.”
Precious Savior, Thank You for the love of family and the role that love, that family plays in my life. Thank You that Your love of us is without hierarchy. You love the first to believe as much and as deeply as You love the one who just professed faith. Help us to love each other as well as You love us. Amen.
Luke 8:21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”
Have a blessed day.
