Lord, Show me the way…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 5:3 In the morning, LORD, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait expectantly.
I try to be very faithful with my devotional reflections. I pray for the Lord’s wisdom and words as I write. I pray that I can remove myself so that those who read the reflections will see Him, hear His wisdom, feel His peace. Sometimes I have an idea of a direction the night before. Sometimes He shows me His path as I’m reading and studying the morning of. Sometimes, like the past several days, I finish my reading and study with still no clear direction of what He would have me say. And so I renew my daily prayer that He will guide me, direct me, show me His path. Your will, Lord, Your words, Your way. Not mine.
Psalm 130:5 I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope.
With all the “new” on the horizon, a new school year, new routines, new paths for so many of us, it struck me this morning that this—praying for His wisdom, discernment, and direction—is what He wants from me EVERY morning. Your will, Lord, Your words, Your way. Not mine.
Psalm 143:8 Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I entrust my life.
Lord, Thank You for this day and this reminder. Help me, daily, to lay my plans before You and seek Your will. Show me what You would have me to say and do. Direct my words and my path. I trust You with my life, Lord. Help me always to seek Your will, Your words, and Your way instead of my own. Draw me closer. Amen.
Exodus 4:12 “Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say.”
Have a blessed day.

The bitter sting of disappointment…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 42:11 Why am I discouraged? Why is my soul so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again—my Savior and my God!
Lord, Be with us when we feel the bitter sting of disappointment in this life, when we are earnestly doing what we feel You have called us to do, but it is not working out the way we thought or planned. Help us to remember that Your ways are not our ways, that Your plan may require us to work through setbacks we did not anticipate. Help us to give You our whole heart and entire effort. Encourage us along Your path.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.
Lord, If we are off-base in our efforts, redirect us. If we are on the right track, help us to endure the bitter sting of disappointment, to understand that our efforts take time and that sometimes we don’t see the impact we have on others, even if it is there. Help us to work tirelessly for You, to strive in all we do to bring You glory and encourage Your people.
2 Timothy 1:7 …for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self control.
Lord, Thank You for this day. Help us never to fear living boldly for You. Help us to understand that sometimes living boldly means failing boldly. The sting of disappointment is bitter, Lord, but our hope is in You, not in this world. Use our disappointments to help us develop endurance and perseverance. Draw us closer to You with every breath. Help us to anchor our hope in You alone. Amen.
Heb 4:16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Have a blessed day.

Our whole hearts…. (devo reflection)

1 Samuel 16:7 “…The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
In the past few months, I have become increasingly frustrated with the fact that pictures do not do justice to God’s magnificent handiwork. I’ve taken photos of gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, breathtaking vistas with mountain upon mountain rolling in the distance, cerulean skies with billowy clouds, only to look at the pictures later and realize that God’s phenomenal creation is not easily reduced to two dimensions. The pictures, while beautiful, just don’t have the same breath-taking, awe-inspiring quality that accompanies the real experience of standing in God’s majesty.
Romans 12:9 Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them….
I think God experiences the authenticity of our worship, praise, and relationship with Him in a similar way. He can tell in an instant if we are being genuine or if we are just going through the motions. We might be able to convince the world with our show, but God knows our hearts. He doesn’t want a flat, two-dimensional relationship. He wants us to be real, true, genuine, authentic—with Him, with ourselves, with each other.
1 Tim 1:5 The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a genuine faith.
Lord, Thank You for this day and for the reminder to bring our whole hearts to You in worship and praise. You don’t just want our sanitized politeness. You want all of us—real, raw, unfiltered, authentic. Help us to be real with You and with ourselves. Help us to move past the “barrier of show” so we can praise You and love others with our whole hearts. Draw us closer. Amen.
Psalm 19:14 May the words of my mouth and meditation of my heart be pleasing to You, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
Have a blessed day.

God’s doing a new thing…. (devo reflection)

Isaiah 43:19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way….
Today is the first optional workday in our district, and by tomorrow, most of our freshmen will be moved to their new college homes. It is a time of new beginnings, which can be difficult for many. But it can also be incredibly exciting. Sometimes, like this morning, when I read this verse, I can hear God’s excitement at what He has in store for us, His perfect plan in His perfect timing.
Jer 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
But new can be hard because it is unfamiliar, so how do we persevere in the new until we get our feet under us? First, don’t forget who you are. You are a deeply, fiercely, unconditionally loved child of God. Second, don’t forget the people who love and support you. In this digital age, it’s easier than ever to keep in touch. So even if you are hours away from home, reach out to those who care. Third, remember you are not the only one facing new. Reach out to others who are in the same boat. They completely understand your struggle because they are living it, too. Encourage and uplift each other.
Isaiah 55:8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.
Lord, Thank You for this day and for the reminder that You are doing a new thing in our lives. Help us to embrace the sometimes messy chaos of new as You grow us into the people You designed us to be. Help us to reach out to others, to love, support, and encourage them in the new. Help us to remember that because You are in control, we are more than conquerors. Help us to embrace Your plans for us. Draw us closer. Amen.
Lam 3:24 Deep in my heart I say, “The LORD is all I need; I can depend on Him!”
Have a blessed day.

The light shines in the darkness…. (devo reflection)

John 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
As I was trying to fall asleep last night, all the worries and anxieties of the day began swirling in my mind. I shouldn’t be surprised by now that those thoughts are loudest and most chaotic when what I long for most is peace and rest. But last night, I forced myself to slow my breathing and focus my thoughts on God’s light. Deep breath in. Deep breath out. God’s got me. God’s got those I love. He is mighty and sovereign.
Isaiah 42:16 I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These things I will do; I will not forsake them.
Fears and worries aren’t the only darkness that tries to creep into my life. Anger, frustration, bitterness, impatience—all these dark characters and many of their relatives often wait on the fringes of my day, trying to steal my joy, hoping to crowd out God’s light in my life. I need to be more diligent about watching for them, about counteracting them in the same way I did last night—by slowing my breathing, focusing my thoughts on God’s light. Deep breath in. Deep breath out. God’s got me. God’s got those I love. He is mighty and sovereign.
Luke 1:78-79 “Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.”
Lord, Thank You for this day and for Your light, which can never be extinguished by the darkness of this world. Help me to be on my guard against worry, anxiety, fear, anger, bitterness, impatience—all the sources of darkness in this world. Your love, Your truth, Your grace and mercy—these are my light. Help me to cling to them. Help me to reflect Your light through my words and actions. Draw me closer to You. Amen.
Eph 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.
Have a blessed day.

A beautiful inheritance…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 16:5 LORD, You alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing….
We often think of inheritance as things people leave us when they die—money, land, possessions. I’ve never given much thought to faith as an inheritance, a legacy passed down from generation to generation. What a beautiful idea that my relationship with Christ can be a legacy, a gift, to others.
Psalm 16:6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
Sadly, it’s not hard to find contention when it comes to inheritance—people squabbling over property division, families torn apart over acreage and buildings. But with a spiritual inheritance, there would be no such arguments. All would see and be strengthened by the gift, the legacy, of faith.
Psalm 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Lord, Thank You for this day and for the idea that my faith is a legacy, an inheritance, for others. When they look at what I leave behind, let them see my unshakable trust in You, even when I am confused and unsure. Let them see my obedience to Your will, even when it is not the path I would have chosen for myself. Let them see my love and compassion for  all Your children, even when the world or my biases say they aren’t worth it or don’t deserve it. Help me to live a life pleasing to You, Lord, a life that leaves a beautiful inheritance for all who know me. Draw us all closer to You. Amen.
Psalm 16:11 You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of Your presence and the pleasures of living with You forever.
Have a blessed day.

A life filled with love…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me….
Saturday morning I came across a saying which really struck me: “You will never look into the eyes of someone God does not love. Always be kind.” Saturday evening I was able to hear an amazing speaker who has incurable colon cancer. The question was raised during the evening: “What does it mean to live a meaningful life when we all know we are going to die?” I’ve been thinking a lot about that saying and that question.
Phil 2:3 Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself.
Then yesterday my pastor’s sermon was about compassion and the fact that as humans, we are wired to show compassion to others. He talked about the fact that as children of God, we are all worthy of compassion, and about how, if we are honest with ourselves, we all have at least one person we feel isn’t worthy of our compassion. God sees them differently. The sermon put me in mind of Saturday’s saying and question.
Eph 4:29 …Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.
Lord, Thank You for this day and for Your fierce love of all Your children. Thank You for the reminder that You put me here to live a meaningful life, a life that glorifies You and points others to You. Thank You for reminding me of my own prejudices and for reminding me of the need to show love and compassion to all—even those whom society deems unworthy, even those whom my prejudices deem unworthy. We are all Your beloved children, Lord. Help us to act like it and to treat each other in a manner befitting Your children. Draw us closer. Amen.
Eph 5:2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered Himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.
Have a blessed day.

I am not alone…. (devo reflection)

John 14:1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me.”
Lord, You know my propensity for anxiety and worry. You know my skill at armchair quarterbacking and second-guessing myself. Thank You for the blanket of love and support that You so graciously wrap me in daily. Thank You for gently, loving turning my face back to You when my focus shifts. Thank You for tirelessly reminding me that You are here, that You are with me. Help me never to forget that I am not alone.
Deut 31:8 The LORD Himself goes before you; He will be with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.
Lord, It is so easy to feel like an island in this life. Being self-reliant and self-sustaining are highly valued traits. But You made us to crave fellowship with each other as well. Gathering in Your name, encouraging one another, pointing each other to You, these things are tremendously important, too. Help me never forget to reach out to Your beloved children.
Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
Lord, Thank You for this day and for hearing me and answering me when I cry out to You for wisdom, guidance, encouragement, grace. Help me never forget that You are with me. Help me never forget to encourage and uplift Your people. Help us to strengthen each other with Your words, Your grace, and Your love. Draw us closer to You. Amen.
Josh 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.
Have a blessed day.

Make a way in the wilderness…. (devo reflection)

Isaiah 43:19 …I am making a way in the wilderness….
This verse takes me back to March of last year. I am sitting in the driver’s seat of my husband’s truck, outside the doctor’s office. The hubs is in the back of the ambulance parked in front of me. The EMT comes to me and says, “Your husband has had a heart attack. We are running him in with lights and sirens. Don’t try to keep up.” Lord Jesus, make a way. Please, God, make a way. Make a way through this wilderness. Make a way. Please, make a way.
Isaiah 55:8 “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts….And My ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.”
Almost a year and a half later, the hubs has no permanent damage and is preparing to hike the Appalachian Trail. I’m so thankful He made a way that allowed the hubs to heal here. But that’s not always the case. I could list many times where His way involved calling loved ones home to Him for healing. Or times when they were allowed to remain but now have to deal with health issues on earth. I don’t understand, quite frankly, but I implicitly trust the One who does.
Psalm 61:2 From the ends of the earth I call to You, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.
Lord, Thank You for this day and for the reminder that You are making a way for us, Your perfect way, through whatever wilderness we face. Thank You for my absolute trust in Your love, Your goodness, and Your sovereignty, even when I don’t understand Your ways.  Continue to make a way through the wilderness of this life, LORD, a way that draws me closer to You. Amen.
Psalm 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Have a blessed day.

An anchor for the soul…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 39:7 And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.
As a child, I had a difficult time wrapping my head around the idea that I was to love God first and my family second. I didn’t really understand how I was supposed to love God, whom I could not see nor rely on in the way I did my parents, more than my parents who were physically with me and loved and cared for me daily.
Hebrews 6:19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.
As an adult who lost both parents unexpectedly and long before I was ready, I get it. God is my anchor. The hope I hold in His fierce love for me, the hope I hold in Heaven, anchors my soul. It allows me to weather heartache, pain, and loss. Don’t mistake this as an easy task. Letting go of loved ones when God calls them home is one of the most painful experiences on this earth. For each loved one I’ve had to say goodbye to, there is a deep ache of longing to see them again. But I WILL see them again one day and in a far better place than this earth.
2 Cor 3:12 Therefore, since we have such hope, we are very bold.
Lord, Thank You for this day and for Your fierce love. Thank You for being the hope that anchors my soul, that allows me to weather the trials of life. It isn’t easy, Lord, but my hope is in You, always, and for that gift, the gift of Your love and grace and my hope in You, I am thankful beyond words. Draw me closer. Amen.
Phil 1:20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
Have a blessed day.
