Sing for joy…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 92:4 For You make me glad by Your deeds, LORD; I sing for joy at what Your hands have done.

After reading the psalm and commentary and praying about what God would have me see or notice, I am walking away from this text with the idea that our praise of God should remain fresh and new. It should not get stale.

Psalm 92:5 How great are Your works, LORD, how profound Your thoughts!

It is so easy to slip into a comfortable rut with our prayer life as with anything else. But when I think of the myriad ways my Creator cares for me daily, shows that care specifically, stale praise does not do Him justice.

Psalm 92:6-7 Senseless people do not know, fools do not understand, that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evil doers flourish, they will be destroyed forever.

Lord, Thank You for this day and this scripture. Thank You for the reminder that my prayer and praise should not be stiff and stale. Help me to praise You with a joyful heart. Help me to show the love and gratitude I feel so deeply for You. Draw me closer. Amen.

Psalm 92:8 But You, LORD, are forever exalted.

Have a blessed day.

When the world seems overwhelming…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 91:1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Lord, Thank You for the ability to dwell in You—in Your safety and love. When the world seems overwhelming and threatening, help me to remember to find rest in Your shadow.

Psalm 91:2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Lord, Thank You for being my refuge and fortress, for the ability to put my trust in You. This is a gift from You. Help me always to remember that it is a privilege granted by You. I am so thankful.

Psalm 91:4 He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Lord, Thank You for this day and this scripture, for Your love and Your protection, for the safety and grace and trust I find in You. Draw me closer. Amen.

Psalm 91:15 He will call on Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.

Have a blessed day.

An ongoing liberation journey…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 90:2 …from everlasting to everlasting You are God.

Last night I joined in a new book study through my church. We are reading Nahum Ward-Lev’s The Liberating Path of the Hebrew Prophets. One of the concepts we talked about last night was the fact that God calls each of us to an ongoing liberation journey and that that journey is toward mutual relationship.

Psalm 90:4 A thousand years in Your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.

The verses of Psalm 90 remind me of that call to an ongoing liberation journey towards relationship with Christ. There is so much in this life that trips me up, that gets in my way when it comes to my relationship with Christ. These verses help me remember what’s important on that journey (God) and why (because our days are finite and He has a job for us to do).

Psalm 90:12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Lord, Thank You for this day and this scripture. Thank You for this new book study to help me along my journey to a closer relationship with You. Thank You for the wisdom to seek, to ask, to knock, so that I may know You better. Draw me closer. Always. Amen.

Psalm 90:14 Satisfy us in the morning with Your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

Have a blessed day.

Positive and uplifting…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 89:1 I will sing of the LORD’s great love forever (with my mouth I will make Your faithfulness known through all generations.

While all the verses I chose here are positive and uplifting, there is a lot of anguish in Psalm 89. Commentary says that “We think when we are in trouble we get ease by complaining; but we do more, get more joy, by praising.” How incredibly true.

Psalm 89:2 I will declare that Your love stands firm forever, that You have established Your faithfulness in heaven itself.

I noticed as I read this Psalm that just reading the passages of anguish and complaint had a physical effect on me. My breath became more shallow. My muscles tensed. I felt….bad, like fight or flight was kicking in. But when I read and typed the verses of praise, my muscles relaxed and I was able to breathe. I felt safer.

Psalm 89:5 The heavens praise Your wonders, LORD, Your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.

Lord, Thank You for this day and scripture. Thank You for the physical reminder of the power of praise and the danger of complaining. Especially right now, it is a crucial reminder of what I should be doing to combat my fatigue. Help me to praise You always. Amen.

Psalm 89:52 Praise be to the LORD forever! Amen and amen.

Have a blessed day.

Passion in prayer…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 88:1 LORD, You are the God who saves me; day and night I cry out to You.

Commentary says Psalm 88 is often considered “the saddest psalm in the entire collection.” They draw parallels between Psalm 88 and Job that had not occurred to me. But while I definitely see despair in this Psalm, what God seems to be laying on my heart this morning is a call to more earnest prayer.

Psalm 88:2 May my prayer come before You; turn Your ear to my cry.

Like everything else in my life, my prayer life goes in cycles. At this time of year, when I am feeling physically, mentally, and emotionally drained, my prayer life feels almost perfunctory. In fact, I would say that at present, my most earnest, most heartfelt prayers come in the middle of the night when I am struggling to sleep and I lift up those whom I know have needs. Since I can’t sleep, I cry out on their behalf. I need to work on bringing that level of passion in prayer back into the light of day.

Psalm 88:9b …I call to You, LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to You.

Lord, Thank You for this day and this scripture. Thank You for laying this issue of earnestness in prayer on my heart. Help me to revive and realign my prayer life, Lord. Help me shake off this exhaustion so that I can lift others up in prayer and lift You higher in praise. Always. Draw me closer. Amen.

Psalm 88:13 But I cry to You for help, LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before You.

Have a blessed day.

Relationship with Him…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 87:1 He has founded His city on the holy mountain.

I learned a long time ago that family is not just the people you were born into. It’s the people you choose, the people who get you, who love you, support you, correct you. Family goes beyond birthright. It is about choice, about choosing relationship. God’s family works the same way.

Psalm 87:4 “I will record Rahab and Babylon among those who acknowledge me—Phillistia too, and Tyre, along with Cush— and will say, ‘This one was born in Zion.’”

Commentary on Psalm 87 was very enlightening. It talked a lot about relationship and how the repetition of “This one was born in Zion” was an open invitation for gentiles into God’s kingdom, that they key to acceptance into God’s family was relationship with Him and not birthright.

Psalm 87:5 “Indeed, of Zion it will be said, “This one and that one were born in her, and the Most High Himself will establish her.”

Lord, Thank You for this day and this  scripture. You built us for relationship, specifically relationship with You. You want us as part of Your family. You want to say of us, “This one was born here.” And You created us with an innate need for that belonging. But this world is so loud, so insistent that it, the world, will help us belong. Help us not to fall for the lies of this world, Lord. Draw us into relationship and fellowship with You. Amen.

Psalm 87:6 The LORD will write in the register of the peoples: “This one was born in Zion.”

Have a blessed day.

Attributes of God…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 86:1 Hear me, LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy.

I pray often to become more like Christ, remade in His image. As I was reading today’s scripture, I see the beautiful attributes of God so clearly.

Psalm 86:2-3 Guard my life, for I am faithful to You; save Your servant who trusts in You. You are my God; have mercy on me, Lord, for I call to You all day long.

God pays attention. He listens. He doesn’t discount anyone as not worthy. He is vigilant and faithful. He is merciful and compassionate. He is trustworthy, forgiving, and abounding in love.

Psalm 86:4 Bring joy to Your servant, Lord, for I put my trust in You.

Lord, Thank You for this day and this scripture. Thank You for the beautiful picture of what it looks like to be more like You. Help me to hone and refine these traits, Lord, so that each day I am remade more in Your image. Draw me closer. Amen.

Psalm 86:5 You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to You.

Have a blessed day.

Cycle of renewal…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 85:4 Restore us again, God our Savior, and put away Your displeasure towards us.

I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time during this time of year seeking renewal. My body, mind, and heart are worn out. I don’t think my sleep is any worse than it always is, but I think when the days of the semester accumulate, I feel that lack more keenly. Restore me, Lord, please.

Psalm 85:6 Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?

And today I’m wondering if revival isn’t a cycle anyway, if maybe, instead of some inner failing, my deep need for revival again is just my soul telling me it’s time to recharge, like a battery in need of repowering. Maybe this is the vine and branches analogy playing out—I need to sink my roots deep in Him to renew that connection.

Psalm 85:7 Show us Your unfailing love, LORD, and grant us Your salvation.

Lord, Thank You for this day and this scripture. Thank You that this exhaustion, this deep need sends me to You seeking revival. Show me Your unfailing love, Lord. Grant me Your salvation. Amen.

Psalm 85:12 The LORD will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest.

Have a blessed day.

A soul that yearns for God…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 84:2 My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

Unfortunately, I saw a lot of time tick off the clock last night. I’ve got a lot on my mind, and any time I was awake, all that junk just came rushing to the front, crowding my thoughts, demanding my attention. I love God so much, yet I have always had trouble laying everything at His feet and leaving it there. It is something I continue to work on.

Psalm 84:4 Blessed are those who dwell in Your house; they are ever praising You.

Instead of being stuck in endless worry-cycles, I continue to strive to cultivate a soul that yearns for God. I want to dwell in His house, be blessed with His peace that passes all understanding. I want to be ever praising Him. This cultivation is, for me, an incredibly slow process, but I keep trying.

Psalm 84:5 Blessed are those whose strength is in You, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.

Lord, Thank You for this day and this scripture. I want You to be my strength. My heart has been on this pilgrimage to draw closer to You for quite some time. Help me not to lose sight of the progress I’ve made. Help me to keep striving to draw closer still. Help me always to trust in You. Amen.

Psalm 84:12 Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts You.

Have a blessed day.

Open and humbled…. (devo reflection)

Psalm 83:1 O God, do not remain silent; do not turn a deaf ear, do not stand aloof, O God.

Commentary says that the ultimate goal of this prayer is that their enemies be humbled by God so that they may come to know and recognize His sovereignty. On its surface, it seems quite contradictory: “Destroy them, Lord, so that they may know You,” but there is a limit to how close we can get to God without a healthy dose of humility.

Psalm 83:16 Cover their faces with shame, LORD, so they will seek Your name.

I am currently struggling with student feedback. I continue to ask for it because I truly want to know what worked, what might work better, what didn’t work at all. But I have to work really hard not to take it personally so that I can learn and grow but also so I can let go of the perceptions that aren’t accurate without taking them to heart. That, for me, takes constant prayer and humility.

Psalm 83:17 May they ever be ashamed and dismayed; May they perish in disgrace.

Lord, Thank You for this day and this scripture. Thank You for the understanding that allowing ourselves to be open and humbled allows us to draw closer to You. Humble me, Lord. Humble those I encounter, especially those with whom I have conflict. Draw us all closer to You. Amen.

Psalm 83:18 Let them know that You, whose name is the LORD—that You alone are the most high over all the earth.

Have a blessed day.
